Sequoia and Emily presented at the Furious Flower Poetry Conference IV at James Madison University (Sept. 18-Sept.21, 2024). Sequoia discussed the deep roots of Black elegy tracing back to Lucy Terry Prince’s “Bars Fight” and through the understudied Harlem Renaissance-era poet Joseph S. Cotter, Jr. Emily’s roundtable presentation focused on the multimodal significance of #BlackPoetsSpeakOut while highlighting in particular Lauren Alleyne’s elegiac contributions both on and off the lyric page. We also connected with the eminent elegy scholar Jahan Ramazani and were able to reconnect with several contributors to Revisiting the Elegy in the Black Lives Matter Era. https://2024.furiousflower.org/
